Public postsecondary educational institutions (state universities and Florida College System institutions) are authorized to participate in the Chris Hixon, Coach Aaron Feis, and Coach Scott Beigel Guardian Program, allowing non-student employees and faculty to serve as armed school guardians after completing 144 hours of training and certification by a sheriff

Discharging a weapon or firearm within 1,000 feet of a school during school hours or sanctioned activities becomes a second-degree felony (effective October 1, 2026), with mandatory custody until court appearance for bail; an exception exists for property owners or authorized persons on private property within that zone

Public postsecondary institutions must adopt active assailant response plans, family reunification plans, and establish threat management teams using state behavioral threat assessment instruments; they must also annually conduct security risk assessments and certify that all faculty, staff, and students have completed active assailant preparedness training

Student threat assessment reports and related psychological records must be transferred to Florida College System institutions or state universities when students enroll, with the State Board of Education and Board of Governors required to establish transfer procedures

State universities and Florida College System institutions may share confidential records with law enforcement and other agencies when reasonably necessary to ensure student safety or access to appropriate services for students experiencing mental health issues
