Florida Building Commission must require the entire building envelope of specified new construction to meet impact resistant requirements and withstand wind speeds of at least 160 mph, beginning with the 9th edition of the Florida Building Code

Requirements apply to R1 and R2 multistory residential buildings with dwelling or sleeping units, new residential construction within 5 miles of tidal water mean high-water lines, and construction in high-velocity hurricane zones

Buildings designated as emergency shelters during natural emergencies must also meet these enhanced construction standards

Rebuilding of structures that become uninhabitable or are destroyed by a natural emergency must comply with the new requirements if they meet the specified criteria
