Counties and municipalities are prohibited from enacting ordinances that prevent members of the Miccosukee Tribe or Seminole Tribe of Florida from constructing chickees in side yards (at least 10 feet from property lines) or near other structures (at least 10 feet away)

Local governments cannot impose chickee regulations more restrictive than federal floodplain management regulations

A "chickee" is defined as an open-sided wooden hut with a thatched roof of palm, palmetto, or other traditional materials that may include a wooden deck, nonwood fasteners, and permitted electrical or plumbing features

Non-tribal members who construct chickees to falsely claim a Florida Building Code exemption commit a first-degree misdemeanor

Chickees are exempt from the Florida Fire Prevention Code if located at least 20 feet from another structure or if fire-proofing measures are approved by a certified fire protection system contractor; effective July 1, 2026
