Units of local government in Florida must accept payment by credit cards, charge cards, bank debit cards, and electronic funds transfers for financial obligations owed to them, except when another form of payment is required by law.

Local governments are required to have a method for accepting these payments online.

Covered local government entities include municipalities, special districts, boards of county commissioners, consolidated or metropolitan governments, clerks of circuit court, sheriffs, property appraisers, tax collectors, and supervisors of elections.

Local governments may surcharge users of electronic payment methods an amount sufficient to cover service fees charged by financial institutions, vending service companies, or credit card companies.

Effective date: January 1, 2027.
