The 65th Infantry Regiment, composed primarily of Puerto Ricans, was incorporated into the regular U.S. Army in 1908 and earned the nickname "Borinqueneers" during the Korean War, referencing the indigenous Taíno name for Puerto Rico

Korean War service resulted in 2,771 Purple Hearts, 606 Bronze Stars, 256 Silver Stars, 9 Distinguished Service Crosses, and 1 Medal of Honor

Florida is home to more than 1.2 million Puerto Rican residents, one of the largest such populations in the United States

April 13 has been recognized nationally as National Borinqueneers Day since 2021 following congressional action
