FGCU was established in May 1991 as Florida's tenth public university and opened in August 1997 with 2,584 students; has grown to over 16,000 students with 66 undergraduate, 28 masters, and 7 doctoral programs

Students have contributed over 4.9 million hours of service learning to Southwest Florida since 1997, with FGCU being one of the only public institutions requiring service learning for graduation

Alumni Association has over 48,000 members, with 2,000 businesses started by alumni in Southwest Florida and approximately 70 percent of alumni working in their field of study
