Local boards of education and public school governing bodies must install weapon detection systems at all main entry points of permanent school buildings where students are present during routine operations, effective July 1, 2027.

Weapon detection systems are defined as security technology using electronic, visual, or analytical means to detect firearms and hazardous objects, regardless of whether they are being carried or otherwise in someone's possession.

Entry/exit points that remain locked, are equipped with alarms, and are not intended for routine student use (including emergency exits) are exempt from the detection system requirement.

School districts are authorized to use available grants and other funding sources to comply with the new requirements.
