Local school systems with law enforcement officers in schools must have collaborative written agreements with law enforcement officials establishing roles in school disciplinary matters and ensuring coordination among agencies involved in discipline and public safety.

By October 1, 2025, agreements must include specific terms for handling student education records and personally identifiable data, including disclosure circumstances and FERPA compliance requirements.

By October 1, 2026, law enforcement officers are prohibited from intervening in school disciplinary matters unless the matter involves suspected criminal conduct or an immediate threat to safety of persons or school property.

By October 1, 2026, local boards of education must adopt policies for resolving written student complaints against law enforcement officers, including allegations of excessive force or policy violations, with procedures similar to complaints against teachers or administrators.

Substantiated complaints against law enforcement officers must be reported to the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council for investigation.
