Local school systems and public schools must adopt policies granting students at least two excused absences per school year for attending or participating in civic or political events

"Civic or political event" is defined as a strike, public comment, candidate speech, political or civil forum, town hall, protest, or similar event

Parents/guardians must notify the school at least one school day prior to the absence; students 18 or older or emancipated minors may provide their own notification

State Board of Education is required to develop a model policy for schools to use in implementing these requirements

Effective July 1, 2026, applying to the 2026-2027 school year and beyond
