Public school employees who would otherwise be required to join the Public School Employees Retirement System (PSERS) may make a one-time irrevocable election to join the Teachers Retirement System of Georgia (TRS) instead

New employees hired on or after September 2, 2026 must make the election within 10 days of employment; current contributing PSERS members as of September 1, 2026 may also elect to switch to TRS

Employees who elect TRS membership cannot transfer any creditable service from PSERS to TRS and may only earn actual membership service and military creditable service in TRS

Current PSERS members with 10+ years of creditable service who switch to TRS may either withdraw their accumulated contributions or leave them in PSERS to retain vested rights; those with less than 10 years must withdraw contributions

Effective date is July 1, 2026, contingent on concurrent funding as required by the Public Retirement Systems Standards Law; automatic repeal occurs if funding is not provided
