Competed in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and won a gold medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics while simultaneously serving as a combat soldier in the Vietnam War, earning a Bronze Star

Nicknamed the "Black Knight" in track and field, inducted into multiple Halls of Fame including the Officers' Candidate School Hall of Fame, Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame, Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, and Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame

Directs the Clerk of the House of Representatives to provide a copy of the resolution to Captain Dr. Mel Pender Jr.
