Clay practiced law for 48 years at Kilpatrick & Cody (now Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP), serving as Chairman of the Executive Committee and helping guide the firm's 1997 merger with Petree Stockton

Served as one of ten United States representatives on the International Chamber of Commerce Commission on Arbitration and was a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators

Founded and chaired the Board of Directors of the Georgia Appleseed Center for Law & Justice, which celebrates its 21st anniversary and focuses on improving systems affecting children's lives throughout Georgia

Received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Anti-Defamation League of Atlanta in 2011 for his commitment to pro bono service and defending human and constitutional rights
