Georgia Senate Resolution 833 recognizes and commends the Honorable Willie E. Burns of Washington, Georgia for his public service and leadership contributions to the state

Burns served in the United States Army, the Elberton Police Department, and the Georgia State Patrol before being elected in 2003 as the first Black Mayor of Washington, Georgia

As mayor, he founded the Wilkes County Community Development Corporation and developed the city's first affordable housing community for low and moderate-income families, as well as a state-of-the-art multipurpose event venue

Burns served as past President of the Georgia Conference of Black Mayors (GCBM), Inc. and is a member of the NAACP Washington, Georgia Branch and a lifetime member of the American Legion

The Secretary of the Senate is directed to provide a copy of the resolution to the Honorable Willie E. Burns
