HB2639 - Mixed Martial Arts Summary

• Extends Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs regulation to include amateur mixed martial arts contests, which were previously excluded from state oversight.

• Defines "amateur mixed martial arts contestant" as a competitor at least 18 years old competing without monetary compensation, and "professional mixed martial arts contestant" as one receiving money or prizes.

• Reduces event fees for promoters from four percent of gross receipts to two percent, and eliminates the tiered fee structure based on receipt amounts over $50,000.

• Removes the additional surcharge fee of $16,750 per promoter license renewal that was required in fiscal years 2007-2009.

• Exempts amateur mixed martial arts contestants from licensing requirements but requires a pre-contest medical examination by a licensed physician; effective July 1, 2020.
