Department of Education urged to develop and implement a statewide plan using existing resources to eliminate milk waste distributed with school lunches by the 2010-2011 school year

Current federal law (42 USC 1758) requires schools in the National School Lunch Program to offer fluid milk in various fat contents, with limited substitutions and waivers available for students with disabilities or medical needs

Department of Education requested to report to the Legislature no later than 60 days before the first day of instruction for 2010-2011 school year on the current amount of wasted milk, the elimination plan, and resulting cost savings

Few Hawaii public school students receive milk substitution or waiver authorizations, with lactose intolerance not qualifying as a waiver condition despite being a common dietary need

Copies of the resolution to be transmitted to the Superintendent of Education, Board of Education Chairperson, and Director of Health
