SB2567 Summary

• Requires the Department of Education to approve one standard set of teaching materials that meet U.S. Department of Education regulations for Race to the Top fund selection criteria on standards and assessments.

• Mandates all public schools use the approved standard teaching materials, except schools may request a waiver from the department.

• Requires standards-based curriculum to include the standard set of teaching materials approved by the department.

• Directs the Department of Education to collaborate with the Joint Venture Education Forum and Department of Defense Education Activity to select and approve teaching materials, with particular focus on facilitating transitions for military students enrolling in Hawaii public schools.

• Requires the Department of Education to report findings and recommendations to the legislature no later than twenty days before the 2011 regular session.
