HB1442 Summary

• Directs the Pacific Aquaculture and Coastal Resources Center at the University of Hawaii at Hilo to study the feasibility of developing a public entity on Hawaii island modeled after Honolulu's Pier 38 commercial fishing village.

• Requires the study to identify other options that may enhance the fishing industry, improve seafood quality and safety, promote sustainability, and generate positive economic activity.

• Study must include seller and buyer demographics, market information, location analysis for infrastructure, environmental impacts, and federal/state regulatory implications including tsunami codes.

• Requires consultation with local and state agencies, scientists, experts, and environmental organizations during the study process.

• Study report with findings, recommendations, and proposed legislation must be submitted to the legislature no later than twenty days before the convening of the 2012 regular session.
