Department of Transportation is urged to examine strategies for improving energy conservation and cost-effectiveness of street lighting on state roadways.

Department must review the feasibility of limiting the hours when roadway lighting is turned on and study where fewer lights can be used without sacrificing public safety or security.

An estimated $7 million per year is spent on electricity costs to illuminate roadways on Oahu alone, making cost-reduction strategies important during economic shortfalls.

Department of Transportation must submit a report of findings and recommendations to the Legislature no later than 20 days prior to the 2012 Regular Session convening.

Certified copies of the resolution must be transmitted to the Governor and Director of Transportation.
