Department of Education is requested to determine whether children from families receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) federal funds have higher rates of truancy or excessive absenteeism.

Department of Education is requested to make recommendations to address any identified truancy issues and to consider programs designed to encourage or ensure school attendance for TANF-funded households.

Department of Education must submit a report of findings and recommendations, including any proposed legislation, to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the 2012 Regular Session.

Department of Human Services is to assist the Department of Education in this study.

Certified copies of the resolution are to be transmitted to the Director of Human Services, the Chairperson of the Board of Education, and the Superintendent of Education.
