More than 110,000 persons in Hawaii have diabetes, with approximately 39,000 unaware of their diagnosis, according to the 2010 Hawaii Diabetes Plan.

Department of Health must provide a written update to the Legislature containing current strategies for addressing the diabetes epidemic, estimated costs of an obesity prevention pilot program, and innovative solutions for pre-diabetes problems.

Direct medical costs for persons with diabetes average 2.4 times higher than for those without diabetes.

Department must submit the report to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the 2012 regular session.

Certified copies of the resolution must be transmitted to the Governor, Directors of Health, Human Services, Education, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and the President of the University of Hawaii.
