S.B. 1120 Summary

• Appropriates unspecified general revenue funds for fiscal years 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 to implement STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and creative media experiential learning initiatives at the University of Hawaii and Department of Education.

• Requires the University of Hawaii, Department of Education, and Economic Development Alliance of Hawaii, Inc. to report annually on participating students and outcomes of their STEM initiatives, with initial report due December 2011.

• Establishes funding for the STEMworks project-based learning model combining software access, creative/digital media, and pre-engineering components, with matching funds required and implementation through the Economic Development Alliance of Hawaii, Inc.

• Directs the Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism to compile and report workforce projections for emerging industries including defense, astronomy, engineering, aquaculture, biotech, and digital media.

• Requires joint agency reports to the legislature and governor no later than 20 days before each regular legislative session beginning December 2011, with an effective date of July 1, 2050.
