S.C.R. No. 82 Summary

• Urges the Department of Education to require all public high schools in Hawaii to offer ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language) classes

• Highly encourages all private high schools to offer Hawaiian language classes at their institutions

• Recognizes Hawaiian as an official state language under Article XV, Section 4 of the Hawaii State Constitution and notes it is the only state-level official language in the United States

• Acknowledges that Hawaiian language revitalization programs like ʻAha Punana Leo and Ke Kula Kaiapuni Hawaiʻi have created a new generation of speakers and increased the visibility of the language throughout the state

• Requires certified copies be transmitted to the Governor, Superintendent of Education, Board of Education Chairperson, and Hawaii Association of Independent Schools
