H.B. No. 993, H.D. 1 - Hawaii Marine Highway System

• Establishes the Hawaii Marine Highway System as an alternative inter-island transportation system patterned after the Alaska Marine Highway System, which has operated since 1963.

• Requires the Department of Transportation to administer the System by developing a comprehensive long-range plan, constructing or leasing ferry terminal facilities, and maintaining facilities throughout the State.

• Creates the Hawaii Marine Highway System Fund within the state treasury to fund operation and maintenance of the System.

• Positions Hawaii to potentially qualify for federal funding as part of the United States National Highway System by establishing a federally designated ferry route network.
