HCR 124 Summary

• Requests the Governor establish the Underserved Communities Library Commission within the Department of Education to examine communities lacking local library services or receiving reduced services.

• Commission membership to include at least one representative each from the Hawaii State Public Library System, Department of Education, Department of Human Services, Office of Information Management and Technology, all four counties, Friends of the Library of Hawaii, Hawaii Association of Independent Schools, Hawaii Public Charter Schools Network, and Hawaii Community Foundation.

• Commission members serve without compensation and shall identify facilities, staffing, materials, and technologies needed by underserved communities and develop resources to establish or enhance library services.

• Commission required to submit findings, recommendations, and proposed legislation to the Legislature no later than twenty days before the 2014 Regular Session convenes and participate in a joint informational briefing upon request.

• Commission terminates June 30, 2014.
