H.C.R. No. 159 Summary

• Requests the Board of Education, in consultation with the State Librarian, to explore the feasibility of activating a statewide library advisory commission for the Hawaii State Public Library System.

• Authorizes the commission to advise the Board of Education on matters relating to public library services, with authority granted under section 26-12 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes.

• Notes the Hawaii State Public Library System operates fifty library branches and currently offers programs including preschool storytimes, storytelling events, author talks, and informational seminars.

• Requires the Board of Education to report findings and recommendations, including any proposed legislation and funding needs, to the Legislature no later than twenty days before the 2014 Regular Session convenes.

• Directs certified copies of the resolution be transmitted to the Chair of the Board of Education and the State Librarian of the Hawaii State Public Library System.
