H.B. 159 - Tuition Waivers Summary

• Requires the University of Hawaii Board of Regents to waive all tuition and fees for qualified resident students who are spouses or children of disabled veterans or National Guard members who became totally disabled in active federal military service.

• Extends full tuition and fee waivers to qualified resident students who are spouses or children of active or reserve Armed Forces or National Guard members killed while engaged in active federal military service.

• Specifies that surviving spouses who remarry lose eligibility for the fee waivers provided under this subsection.

• Maintains existing Board of Regents authority to grant tuition waivers for graduate assistants, reciprocal agreements with other states, Pacific and Asian students, and military members stationed in Hawaii.

• Takes effect July 1, 2050.
