Maunalua Bay Beach Park restrooms were closed in early 2010 for failing to meet federal standards and remained closed for approximately four years despite multiple stated reopening dates by city officials.

The lengthy closure caused inconvenience to residents and visitors and required the City and County of Honolulu to incur additional expenses renting portable toilets as temporary facilities.

The closure was attributed to various complications including coordination with private landowners, installation of a sewer pipe under a state highway, and connection to a privately owned wastewater system.

Urges the City and County of Honolulu to carefully document lessons learned from the four-year restroom repair project and require appropriate city officials to review findings to prevent similar problems in the future.

Directs certified copies of the resolution be transmitted to the Mayor and all members of the Council of the City and County of Honolulu.
