Department of Public Safety and University of Hawaii are encouraged to develop an educational pathway for administration of justice students to prepare for careers as adult corrections officers.

University of Hawaii community colleges are requested to provide instruction and curricula in administration of justice programs that equip students with skills needed to meet the Department of Public Safety's requirements.

Adult corrections officers must complete Basic Corrections Training including 440 hours of classroom time, physical training, suicide monitoring and prevention, first aid, CPR, and crisis intervention.

Current staffing levels of adult corrections officers are disproportionately small compared to the growing prison population, creating safety concerns for staff and inmates.

Certified copies of the resolution are to be transmitted to the Director of Public Safety and the President of the University of Hawaii.
