S.B. 229 Summary

• Establishes statutory procedures and causes for removal by impeachment of the governor, lieutenant governor, and appointive officers requiring senate consent for removal.

• Defines impeachable causes as: treason, bribery, high crimes and misdemeanors; misfeasance, malfeasance, or nonfeasance; or moral turpitude, with conviction requiring two-thirds senate concurrence.

• Grants the House of Representatives sole power of impeachment and the Senate sole power to try impeachments, with the Chief Justice presiding over senate trials.

• Specifies detailed procedures including appointment of investigative committees, service of articles of impeachment, organization of the court of impeachment, witness compensation, and judgment procedures.

• Takes effect July 1, 2050.
