SB 2422 Summary

• Allows Department of Education employees and agents to volunteer to administer auto-injectable epinephrine to students in anaphylactic shock, in addition to existing glucagon administration authority for diabetic students.

• Requires written authorization from student's parent or guardian and medical certification from a physician or physician assistant that epinephrine may be administered by a volunteer.

• Mandates that any employee or agent volunteering to administer epinephrine receive proper instruction from a qualified health care professional (physician, physician assistant, advanced practice registered nurse, registered nurse, or certified diabetes educator) overseen by the Department of Health.

• Requires parents or guardians to supply auto-injectable epinephrine supplies to the school, which must store them in a secure but accessible location.

• Appropriates unspecified general revenues for fiscal year 2014-2015 to the Department of Education for contracting with the Department of Health to provide required instruction and training, effective July 1, 2050.
