SB 2435 Summary

• Establishes mandatory labeling requirements for foods produced with genetic engineering, effective January 1, 2015.

• Raw agricultural commodities must display "Genetically Engineered" on packaging and retail store shelves; processed foods must be labeled "Produced with Genetic Engineering" on front or back of package; seeds must be labeled on container and sales receipt.

• Exempts foods from animals not genetically engineered, organic-certified foods, certain processed foods using only genetically engineered processing aids or enzymes, alcohol, restaurant prepared foods, and medical foods.

• Violations subject to fines not to exceed $500.

• Law becomes effective only after three other states (excluding Hawaii) enact mandatory genetically engineered food labeling laws consistent with this bill's provisions.
