SB2521 Summary

• Requires labeling of genetically engineered foods, raw agricultural commodities, and seeds sold in Hawaii beginning January 1, 2015, with specific label language depending on product type ("Genetically Engineered" for raw commodities and seeds; "Produced with Genetic Engineering" for processed foods).

• Provides a grace period until January 1, 2015, during which processed foods with less than 0.9% genetically engineered materials by weight are not deemed misbranded.

• Exempts certain products from labeling requirements including meat/animal products not themselves genetically engineered, certified organic foods, foods prepared for immediate consumption in restaurants, processing aids and enzymes derived from genetic engineering, alcohol, and medical foods.
