Request that the Kahoolawe Island Reserve Commission plan for development of its 8.261-acre Kihei property on South Kihei Road to reflect Native Hawaiian culture, history, and tradition.

Proposed development includes a two-story office and information center with approximately 14,400 square feet of interior space and 8,100 square foot footprint to replace the Commission's current leased space in Wailuku.

Information center will feature approximately 5,250 square feet of historical and interactive exhibits about Kahoolawe, plus an auditorium, classroom, visitor center, outdoor performance area, and plant nursery available for public and community use.

Property currently contains the Commission's boathouse sheltering the vessel Hākilo and includes gravel and concrete access driveway; 2000 environmental assessment and 2002 Executive Order No. 3963 previously authorized this development.

Development will require a special management area major permit, zoning change, and community plan amendment to establish public/quasi-public land use designations for the currently park-zoned parcel.
