HB1153 Summary

• Exempts disabled veterans from paying the $45 annual state motor vehicle registration fee if they are Hawaii residents, honorably discharged, have a 100% service-connected disability rating from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and receive disability retirement pay.

• Exemption applies to only one vehicle per disabled veteran and does not cover vehicles used for commercial purposes.

• Requires the Director of the Office of Veterans Services to report to the Legislature and Department of Taxation at least 20 days before each regular session on the total number of qualifying disabled veterans using this exemption.

• Applies to motor vehicle registrations issued or renewed after January 1, 2016.
