HB897 - Uniform Interstate Family Support Act

• Updates Hawaii Revised Statutes Chapter 576B to align with the Hague Convention on the International Recovery of Child Support and Other Forms of Family Maintenance concluded November 23, 2007.

• Expands jurisdiction and procedures to allow recognition and enforcement of child and spousal support orders from foreign countries that are signatories to the Convention or have established reciprocal agreements with Hawaii.

• Establishes new definitions and procedures for registering, recognizing, enforcing, and modifying foreign support orders, including requirements for documentation, currency conversion, and grounds for refusing enforcement.

• Creates provisions for direct requests from individuals in foreign countries seeking establishment or modification of support orders without going through central authorities.

• Applies to all support proceedings begun after the effective date of the Act involving establishment, determination of parentage, or registration and modification of prior support orders regardless of when originally issued.
