Request the Department of Education to convene a working group to develop recommendations for transitioning schools away from plastic and polystyrene foam food service products to sustainable alternatives.

Working group to include the Superintendent of Education as chairperson, the University of Hawaii Vice President of Administration, Pearl City High School Principal, and Sunset Beach Elementary School Principal.

Direct the working group to recommend ways to expand or establish composting programs at schools where appropriate to divert food, green, and paper waste.

Require the working group to report findings, recommendations, and any proposed legislation to the Legislature no later than twenty days before the 2016 Regular Session convenes.

Align with Hawaii's Aloha+ Challenge goal of reducing solid waste by 70 percent prior to disposal and follow the University of Hawaii's model of eliminating plastic and polystyrene products from campus food service.
