Sister-state relationship between Hawaii and Guangdong province was established in 1985, marking 30 years of formal ties that have supported Hawaii's economic development with China.

Over 75 percent of Hawaii's population can trace ancestral roots to Guangdong province, making it Hawaii's first Chinese sister state due to historical Chinese immigration patterns.

Guangdong Senior Executive Leadership Training Program was established at the University of Hawaii in 1999 through the Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism and the College of Business Administration.

Hawaii and Guangdong maintain ongoing cultural and economic exchanges through continuing delegation visits and cooperative programs.

Certified copies of the resolution will be transmitted to the United Chinese Society, See Dai Doo Society, Teo Chew Society, and the Governor of Guangdong province.
