HB1129 Summary

• Department of Public Safety must develop policies and procedures to govern requests for special duty (off-duty law enforcement services) performed by deputy sheriffs for compensation from non-state entities.

• Department must establish a compensation schedule for deputy sheriffs performing special duty services.

• Department must submit a report to the legislature by February 1, 2018, detailing policies, procedures, amounts paid by state agencies, and compensation received by each deputy sheriff performing special duty.

• Report must include comparison of special duty rates between county police departments and the Department of Public Safety for each county, and analysis of why deputy sheriffs are not assigned regular duty to state agencies needing security.

• Act takes effect upon approval and repeals on June 30, 2018.
