Permits licensed dental hygienists to practice under general supervision of a licensed dentist for patients of record with an established treatment plan, rather than requiring direct supervision in all circumstances.

Maintains requirement that dental hygienists practice under direct supervision when administering intra-oral block anesthesia, and prohibits performance of irreversible procedures or anesthesia administration under general supervision.

Clarifies that general supervision means the dentist must examine and diagnose the condition and authorize procedures, but is not required to be physically present during the delegated act or procedure.

Applies to dental hygienists operating in offices of licensed dentists, hospitals, nursing homes, nonprofits, health clinics, schools, and public facilities.

Effective date: July 1, 2017.
