S.B. 209 Summary

• Prohibits persons or entities doing business in Hawaii from requesting, collecting, or mailing social security numbers or the last four digits of social security numbers unless one of seven specified exceptions applies.

• Establishes exceptions allowing SSN collection for state or federal law compliance, credit transactions, deposit accounts, employment purposes, tax compliance, law enforcement or child support collection, and health care organizations for medical treatment or insurance.

• Requires all persons or entities collecting social security number data to ensure it is securely stored in paper or electronic format.

• Exempts voluntary disclosure of an individual's own social security number and mailing of public records containing social security numbers from the restrictions.

• Subjects violators to the same penalties applicable to businesses under section 487J-3 of Hawaii Revised Statutes.
