Department of Land and Natural Resources is urged to conduct an extensive statewide pueo (Hawaiian short-eared owl) habitat inventory, with emphasis on Oahu, in collaboration with the University of Hawaii, nonprofit environmental organizations, and other stakeholders.

Pueo population is thought to be declining, especially on the Ewa plain, and the species is listed as endangered on Oahu due to threats from feral cats, dogs, rats, and mongoose.

Department of Land and Natural Resources is requested to submit an interim report to the Legislature no later than one month before the 2018 Regular Session, including an estimate of time and resources necessary to complete a statewide pueo population estimate and habitat inventory.

Certified copies of the resolution are to be transmitted to the Governor, Board of Land and Natural Resources Chairperson, Hawaiian Homes Commission Chairperson, Office of Hawaiian Affairs CEO, University of Hawaii System President, county mayors, and Navy Region Hawaii Commander.
