S.C.R. No. 61 Summary

• Requests the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts to establish the Hawaii Commission on the History and Culture of People of African Descent, to be temporarily placed within the Foundation.

• Commission shall consist of 11 members appointed by the Governor: 2 from African American Diversity Culture Center Hawaii, 2 from NAACP, 1 from University of Hawaii, and 6 at-large members, with chair selected by majority vote.

• Commission members shall be reimbursed for necessary expenses including travel, and may research and educate the public about African descent contributions to Hawaii, coordinate related projects and events, and publish annual reports with recommendations.

• Commission shall cease to exist on June 30, 2019.

• Certified copies to be transmitted to the Governor and Executive Director of the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.
