H.B. 1688 - Rat Lungworm Disease in Non-Human Animals Study Group

• Establishes a rat lungworm disease in non-human animals study group within the Department of Agriculture to evaluate historical research, review international reports, and gather information on rat lungworm cases in Hawaii, particularly involving companion animals.

• Study group shall consist of members appointed by the University of Hawaii president (2+), University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture dean (1+), Department of Health director (2), Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy dean (2), Board of Agriculture chairperson (2 including a veterinarian), up to 2 Senate members, up to 2 House members, Hawaii Veterinary Medical Association (1), and other members appointed by the study group chairperson.

• Requires the study group to submit findings and recommendations, including proposed legislation, to the legislature no later than 20 days prior to the 2019 regular session.

• Appropriates $100,000 from general revenues for fiscal year 2018-2019 to support the study group's operations, staff, research, and report preparation.

• Study group dissolves on June 30, 2019; members serve without compensation though the Department of Agriculture covers all necessary expenses including travel.
