HB 1906 Summary

• Amends Hawaii Revised Statutes Section 707-711 to expand the definition of assault in the second degree to include intentionally or knowingly causing bodily injury to health care workers engaged in performance of duty at health care facilities as defined in Section 323D-2.

• Defines covered health care workers to include health care professionals, physician assistants, surgical assistants, advanced practice registered nurses, nurse aides, respiratory therapists, laboratory technicians, and radiology technicians.

• Adds protection for persons providing home health care services as defined in Section 431:10H-201 and case management service providers employed or contracted by mutual benefit societies.

• Makes intentionally or knowingly causing bodily injury to these health care workers a Class C felony under assault in the second degree statute.

• Takes effect upon approval; does not affect rights, duties, or proceedings that began before the effective date.
