Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism (DBEDT) shall conduct an economic development study on opportunities for automated manufacturing in Hawaii.

DBEDT must submit a preliminary report no later than twenty days before the 2019 legislative session and a final report no later than twenty days before the 2020 legislative session.

An unspecified amount from general revenues is appropriated for fiscal year 2018-2019 to fund the study on automated manufacturing opportunities.

Study aims to address Hawaii's reliance on imports (over 90% of consumed products) and support small manufacturers (34% have fewer than four employees) through advanced manufacturing and automation.

Act takes effect July 1, 2112.
