HB2121 Summary

• Establishes a virtual center for women in technology at the University of Hawaii to increase female participation in computer science programs.

• Center shall develop marketing and outreach to build interest in computer science among women, review curriculum for gender-friendly teaching methods, and set measurable enrollment goals.

• Center shall coordinate with middle and high schools on mentoring, summer workshops, and after-school computer science programs, and serve as state clearinghouse for women in computer science matters.

• Director appointed by the University of Hawaii chancellor administers the center, drawing on existing state personnel and contracting additional resources as needed.

• Director shall submit annual reports to the legislature on center programs and achievement by 20 days before each regular legislative session; effective July 1, 2018 and repealed June 30, 2023.
