HB 2669 Summary

• Requires health insurance policies in Hawaii to cover oocyte (egg) and sperm cryopreservation procedures for cancer patients who have not yet started treatment.

• Eligible patients must be adult females of reproductive potential or adult males diagnosed with cancer and not yet begun chemotherapy, biotherapy, or radiation therapy.

• Coverage includes all outpatient expenses such as evaluations, laboratory assessments, medications, treatments, and cryopreservation costs, limited to one procedure per lifetime per patient.

• Insurance companies are not required to cover storage costs, future medical procedures to use the preserved oocytes or sperm, or services deemed not clinically appropriate.

• Applies to accident and health insurance policies under Chapter 431 and hospital/medical service contracts under Chapter 432, effective July 1, 2018.
