Department of Land and Natural Resources is requested to convene a working group to identify high priority areas for potential designation as marine managed areas.

Working group must include native fishermen, community members from each affected geographical area, and marine scientists.

Resolution emphasizes marine managed areas protect coral ecosystems, increase marine biomass and diversity, support sustainable fisheries, and provide natural barriers against storms and coastal erosion.

State has committed to effectively manage 30 percent of Hawaii's nearshore ocean waters by 2030, including through community-based marine management.

Certified copies of the resolution are to be transmitted to the Governor and the Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources.
