Department of Education requested to seek federal grants and additional county funding for School Resource Officers (SROs) at DOE schools statewide.

Currently 38 SROs assigned to middle/intermediate and high schools on Neighbor Islands: 18 in Hawaii District, 7 in Kauai District, and 13 in Maui District; no SROs on Oahu campuses.

SROs are sworn law enforcement officers funded solely through county agreements with Hawaii, Kauai, and Maui counties and provide campus security, student mentoring, anti-crime education, and community relationship-building.

DOE required to submit progress report to Legislature no later than 20 days before 2019 Regular Session convening regarding federal grants and county funding efforts for SROs statewide.

Certified copies of resolution to be transmitted to Governor, Superintendent of Education, and mayors of Honolulu, Hawaii, Kauai, and Maui counties.
