Request Hawaii Health Systems Corporation Oahu Regional Board to assess availability of long-term care beds in City and County of Honolulu and develop recommendations regarding closure of Leahi Hospital, Maluhia Long-Term Care Health Center, or both.

Leahi Hospital reported operating loss of $9,073,968 and Maluhia Long-Term Care Health Center reported operating loss of $7,387,367 for fiscal year 2016-2017.

Leahi Hospital operates 155 long-term care beds and Maluhia Long-Term Care Health Center operates 158 beds; Oahu has total capacity of 2,726 long-term care beds as of 2016.

Both facilities have reduced staff positions and temporarily halted new admissions in recent years to address operating deficits.

Hawaii Health Systems Corporation Oahu Regional Board must submit findings, recommendations, and any proposed legislation to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to convening of 2019 Regular Session.
